(WFI) Louis van Gaal has put his first mark on his new club.

The grass pitches at Manchester United’s Carrington training facility were pulled up on Tuesday. They will be replaced with a synthetic-grass hybrid material called Desso.

The Desso surface will match the one laid at Old Trafford last year.

Van Gaal also ordered trees be planted at the facility to provide shelter from the wind.

His attention to detail was a big part of the reason for his hiring. The changes come less than a week after he officially took over as Manchester United manager.

Russia President Vladimir Putin visited the site of construction for one of the country’s 2018 FIFA World Cup venues.

During a visit to Samara on Monday, Putin browsed a display of architectural plans for seven World Cup venues and helped lay a time capsule.

Accompanying him during the visit were sports minister Vitaly Mutko and Samara’s acting regional governor, among other government officials.

“I am confident that we will carry it out at the highest level,” Putin said of the World Cup, according to ITAR-TASS.

“A wonderful location has been selected here in your city for building the future stadium.”

The president says the project will allow Russia “to show many of our cities to the world and will develop infrastructure in our cities, including transport, hotel, and communications infrastructure”.
