Around the Rings is on the scene in Acapulco for the Association of National Olympic Committees General Assembly.

“This meeting in Acapulco will take stock of plans for London 2012, the next big project on the horizon for the 205 national Olympic committteess which are here,” said ATR editor Ed Hula.

“In addition, this meeting should provide a great deal of feedback on the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore…a major new undertaking for NOCs as well as the IOC.”

ATR editor Ed Hula, reporter Ed Hula III and correspondent Karen Rosen are reporting from the ANOC General Assembly.

“The Around the Rings team is also looking forward to the first international presentations of the Annecy, Munich and PyeongChang, the three cities in the running for the 2018 Winter Olympics. It’s an important event for all three to try to make a strong impression,” Hula said.

This is an extended assignment in Acapulco, covering 10 days, unusual for such a meeting. The IOC Executive Board meets Oct 25 to 27, adding to the agenda in Mexico. Approval of the sports program for Sochi could be handled here, including the addition of women’s ski jumping.

The Around the Rings special edition magazine for the ANOC General Assembly is available for the first time ever in English, Spanish and French.

The special edition magazine includes an exclusive interview with ANOC president Mario Vazquez Rana, who has steered the growth of NOCs from 144 in 1980 to 205 in 2010.

“I believe the world has changed a lot in the last 30 years, both in economic and political aspects as well as in social and sport issues,” Vazquez Rana said in the interview.

“Maybe I am in a privileged position to evaluate the progress achieved by ANOC in this period, due to the fact that I have been its President since its foundation,” Vazquez Rana continued.
